P3

Last week was Japan Week at Papdale.  We have been learning all about Japan and Japanese culture.  As it was Children's Day in Japan on Saturday, P2 made some Koinobori carp kites to celebrate this. Here are some pictures of us flying our Koinobori kites.  We made the kites from material and cable ties (with some help from Mrs Harris!).  We decorated the kites to look like fish with different patterns and colours.  They have red and white ribbons for tails, to match the colours of the Japanese flag.

2S were very lucky this morning to have Helen O' Neil come into our classroom to show us how to make sushi, which is a traditional Japanese dish. We started by chopping up some vegetables into thin strips. Then we got a nori sheet (made from seaweed) and flattened down some sticky rice to cover the nori sheet. We flattened it with our fingers so we needed some water to stop it from sticking to our fingers. After that we chose what vegetables we wanted to go in our sushi and rolled it up.  Finally Helen cut up the big roll into 6 smaller rolls for us and some of us tasted the sushi. We even tried using chop sticks after Helen showed us what to do.  Thank you very much Helen for showing us how to make sushi today!

P2 had a workshop with Scottish Ballet today.  We worked on creative dance with a theme of The Nutcracker.  The Snow Queen played her part, freezing and melting us!  A huge thanks to Mim for being a great teacher!

As part of our Grandparents topic, we went back in time to a school when you wrote on slates with slate pencils, you got lines or the belt and everyone had their own individual seat at a desk.  

Neave's Mum kindly came in to show us how she writes with a pen and ink ( a dippy-in pen) as children would have used long ago at school.  

A huge thank you to all who have contributed photos and items for our Museum.  It is always amazing the range of items folk have and are willing to bring in to show our children, so that they can learn about the past. Our Museum was open over Parents Evening, but if you weren't able to see it, here are a few photos.
