Japanese Children's Day

Last week was Japan Week at Papdale.  We have been learning all about Japan and Japanese culture.  As it was Children's Day in Japan on Saturday, P2 made some Koinobori carp kites to celebrate this. Here are some pictures of us flying our Koinobori kites. 

We made the kites from material and cable ties (with some help from Mrs Harris!).  We decorated the kites to look like fish with different patterns and colours.  They have red and white ribbons for tails, to match the colours of the Japanese flag.

Chinese New Year

Today Helen O' Neil came in to tell us a bit about Chinese New Year. Mrs O' Neil and her family lived in Malaysia before coming to Orkney. We managed to fit all of the P2 classes into one classroom. She showed us some of the decorations you might see in places that celebrate the Chinese New Year and told us some stories about the 12 animals involved in the Chinese New Year. We even got a chance to do a lion dance. The costume was great fun and we made lots of noise!

                             Visit from Dental Nurse Cole's mum came to teach the P3 classes how to look after their teeth. They got a big shock at how much sugar is in their favourite sweet treats and drinks! They are learning how to choose snacks and drinks with less sugar.                                     Thank you Claire
